Ahhhhhh… Lego Target clearance stickers. Seriously. Have you ever seen anything more wonderful than that? It doesn’t get much better than 50% off on Lego. Especially Star Wars Lego!
I remember the golden days of Target clearance pricing on Lego. I used to be able hit the store at 8 Mile and Van Dyke, and get $400 worth of Lego for $100. Those days are over. This summer clearance season, I only managed to snag a few sets; Anakin’s & Sebulba’s Podracers 7962, Bounty Hunter Assault Gunship 7930, and the Cool Cruiser 5767.
I think over the years, retailers have gotten MUCH better at inventory control and predicting consumer demand. There just isn’t as much excess product on the shelves. I also think Lego has gotten even more popular, and people snatch it up when they see it on sale. Target clearance pricing works in three rounds (sometimes four):
- 30%
- 50%
- 70%
It used to be a waiting game for collectors. We’d see it at 30%, and get excited by the thought of what was sure to come. At 50%, we’d start getting antsy, wondering if we’d be able to properly time our next visit. At 70%, we’d clear the shelves of everything. Now, people swoop as soon as they see those first red stickers hit the shelves. 🙁
Let’s be honest. Lego is an incredible toy. It is of the highest quality. It is fun for all ages. And it promotes endless play and creativity. But it’s expensive.
I am an Adult Fan of LEGO (AFOL) and an active member of the Michigan LEGO User Group (MichLUG). I have loved LEGO for as long as I can remember. I am currently working on the following models:
– UCS Millenium Falcon
– Emmett’s Apartment Building
– Gringott’s Bank
I love target! And love Lego sales! Nothing like it!
I love Target, too. Walmart has had a LOT of 30% off sales recently. It’s allowed me to pick up a lot of the newer licensed stuff. And if you have a Meijer by you, they’ve had some crazy sales. Just picked up the Dino Triceratops set for $17.50. Those sets just came out!
