Let me start off my apologizing that I can’t embed this excellent LEGO Blocumentary into the page. For whatever reason, LEGO decided to make it difficult.
Anyway, follow the link, and enjoy part three of this LEGO video about what it means to be an AFOL (Adult Fan Of LEGO). Directed by Jess Gibson, it takes you behind the scenes of some of the most influential LEGO builders out there. Fascinating, and very well done.
LEGO Blocumentary
I’m a geek. Just a different kind up geek.
Nerd hobby #2.
-I did not catch the name of this AFOL…
I’m amazed how much I have in common with the AFOLs profiled in this LEGO Blocumentary. I too am a geek, but a different kind of geek. I’m not the geek you remember from your school days. I collect and build LEGO. My other nerd hobbies include collecting Star Wars toys, and building extremely accurate costumes. I also love zombie flicks, and books like The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. But I am also an avid sports fan, and enjoy playing sports. I am married with children. I like to cook, and enjoy good beer and fine wine.
Am I a geek? Yes, but a well rounded one!
The AFOL that talked about being a geek nailed why many of us choose to be who we are.
There’s freedom in being old enough not to care.
He is absolutely 100% correct in this. I don’t care what people think. Yes, I prefer to be liked by people, but not at the expense of not being me. I tend to surround myself with accepting, wonderful people. We all have our quirks. It’s what makes us each worth knowing. Be true to yourself. Always.
I look for parts. I don’t really care about sets.
Another sentiment I agree with completely. Most LEGO sets don’t interest me for what they are*. I look at them as selections of parts. I look for sets that have parts I will find useful for what I want to build. Did you catch the amazing Big Wheel mad by the first AFOL in the 3rd part of tis LEGO Blocumentary? It was awesome! Really took me back to my childhood…
What about you? Do you have any other geeky hobbies? Do you buy LEGO for the sets or for the parts?
* The exception to this rule are the modular buildings LEGO has been producing like the Cafe Corner and the Grand Emporium. These are about perfect the way they are.
I am an Adult Fan of LEGO (AFOL) and an active member of the Michigan LEGO User Group (MichLUG). I have loved LEGO for as long as I can remember. I am currently working on the following models:
– UCS Millenium Falcon
– Emmett’s Apartment Building
– Gringott’s Bank
Personally I’m all about parts with a handful of exceptions. The modulars are beautiful, as are some of the persian/asian sets but even those are more for the parts (I bought two battle of Alamut sets for the domes on the top and the camels).
I do microscale landscapes and industrial minifig scale, so if a set has lots of a colour/part I want/need then I’ll get 3-4 of them when on sale. If not, I’ll let it pass.
The only exception is the Maersk Ship and train. Wish I’d picked those up but they are extortionate now…
I just sold off my spare copy of the Maersk Ship, so I know all too well the high prices they commend these days.
