I had the privilege of being invited to an IMAX 3D sneak preview of The LEGO Movie yesterday morning. I’ll cut to the chase. I LOVED this movie!
The thing I liked most about the movie is the way it was done. The LEGO Movie looks and feels like one big beautiful stopmotion film. It doesn’t seem animated. The minifigures only move in ways it’s possible for a real LEGO minifigure to move.
And the story is just wonderful. It really emphasizes what’s best about LEGO; using your imagination, and believing you can build anything you want.
There are several nods to the AFOL community in The LEGO Movie. There are scenes with at least one MOC that I recognized from our community; George Washington crossing the Delaware in a boat. And when the LEGO minifigures are trying to build something, they “see” the pieces sort of Matrix style, and the LEGO IDs are popped up on the screen. I really liked this part for some reason.
Another thing I really loved was seeing all the characters from the LEGO universe. On the way home, my children and I tried identifying scenes in which all 16 LEGO Movie CMFs were included. We were successful! And the casting for the characters was perfect. I would not change any of them.
While I was bummed we didn’t get any of The LEGO Movie polybags, we did get these cut cardboard cut outs to put on our 3D glasses. I think they make a nice display piece, and my kids thought they were really cute.
So, to recap:
- Storyline and plot? Loved ’em!
- Animation? Loved it!
- Characters and cast? Loved ’em!
I really have nothing bad to say about this movie.
I will say one last thing The LEGO Movie, and it will make sense once you see it, too. Especially if you are an AFOL. This movie has already had a profound effect on my personal displays in my home…
Play well!
I am an Adult Fan of LEGO (AFOL) and an active member of the Michigan LEGO User Group (MichLUG). I have loved LEGO for as long as I can remember. I am currently working on the following models:
– UCS Millenium Falcon
– Emmett’s Apartment Building
– Gringott’s Bank
Oh my! You are so lucky! I still have to wait a week or two before it’s in cinema’s around here 🙂
Lucky you! That is awesome. I can’t wait to see it.
I do feel pretty fortunate for having the opportunity to see it already. It was really, really good. The only bad part about the movie is now that I saw it, I REALLY want to get all the sets!!!
Haha! Yeah, I agree. I don’t know much about the movie plot at all. I did buy one of the minifigs from it. I’m sure I’ll buy the rest shortly. Lego has sure is good at getting people to buy their products. Since I’ve been kind of out of the Lego loop lately I recently found out they have a Disney princess line. I haven’t bought any yet but I know I will. Oh Lego, you always have a way to reel me back in!
