Over the years, my Lego collection has grown quite large.  So large in fact, it seems almost impossible to build the way I’d like.  As a child, I remember having a good mental inventory of my pieces.  I knew the types, colors, and rough numbers.  But I only had a couple thousand pieces stored in the canvas Lego bag.

Today, my collection takes up two corners of my basement, and probably numbers 50-70,000 pieces.  Stored in various tubs.  And boxes.  And Pick a Brick cups.  I can’t find things. I’m not ever sure what I have

How do you handle storing larger collections?  How do you build?

He’s my current sorting method.  Once finished, I’ll see how it’s working out, and adjust accordingly:

  • Two large bins.  One for 2xN bricks all colors.  One for 1xN bricks all colors.
  • Several Lego tubs of plates.  All sizes and colors mixed.
  • Several Lego tubs of slopes.  All sizes and colors mixed.
  • Small bin for various sizes and colors of tiles.
  • Several compartmentalized storage racks for small bits.
  • Numerous containers filled with minifig related pieces.
  • Large bin with everything else.  This is what I usually build from and grab pieces I need from the sorted supply.

It ain’t working for me.  Kinda frustrating.
