Over the years, my Lego collection has grown quite large. So large in fact, it seems almost impossible to build the way I’d like. As a child, I remember having a good mental inventory of my pieces. I knew the types, colors, and rough numbers. But I only had a couple thousand pieces stored in the canvas Lego bag.
Today, my collection takes up two corners of my basement, and probably numbers 50-70,000 pieces. Stored in various tubs. And boxes. And Pick a Brick cups. I can’t find things. I’m not ever sure what I have
How do you handle storing larger collections? How do you build?
He’s my current sorting method. Once finished, I’ll see how it’s working out, and adjust accordingly:
- Two large bins. One for 2xN bricks all colors. One for 1xN bricks all colors.
- Several Lego tubs of plates. All sizes and colors mixed.
- Several Lego tubs of slopes. All sizes and colors mixed.
- Small bin for various sizes and colors of tiles.
- Several compartmentalized storage racks for small bits.
- Numerous containers filled with minifig related pieces.
- Large bin with everything else. This is what I usually build from and grab pieces I need from the sorted supply.
It ain’t working for me. Kinda frustrating.
I am an Adult Fan of LEGO (AFOL) and an active member of the Michigan LEGO User Group (MichLUG). I have loved LEGO for as long as I can remember. I am currently working on the following models:
– UCS Millenium Falcon
– Emmett’s Apartment Building
– Gringott’s Bank
I don’t have that much either. Not yet?
But for now, living in a small flat, I guess that’s okay 😉 And minifigs don’t take that much room!
keep in mind, I have my entire collection from when I was a child, and a good friend gave me his several years back. And I’ve been collecting as an adult for 10+ years.
My advice to everyone, if they plan on accumulating a lot of Lego, is to stay on top of organization. Once it gets out of control, it’s hard to tame. :-/
So jealous! We don’t have many. We just have 1 big bin for most of our bricks (from sets and pick a brick) and then Lego Friends is in a different bin.
Yeah, I got lucky with clearance sales for many years and was able to buy a lot very cheaply. Sadly, those days are mostly over.
