If there is a king of medieval fantasy LEGO, Derfel Cadarn surely wears the crown. My first LEGO love was castle, so his creations hold a special place in my heart. No only has he revolutionized LEGO castle building with his amazing techniques, he is an incredibly prolific builder.
Where do i start with these medieval fantasy LEGO creations?
I guess I’ll start with the obvious. These creations are gorgeous. I love how they each have their own distinct color palette even though the majority of the builds are gray scale. The blues in the picture above. The greens below. The entirely different greens below that! Each creation has a signature color temperature!
I do wonder if all these foliage elements are genuine LEGO. If they are, I gotta get me some of them!
A signature technique of Derfel is the crumbling stone work. I think he single handedly drove up the price of 1×1 round plates in black, tan, brown, and all shades of gray!
Compare the warm greens used above, and the cool greens below. The colors alone set the mood in these creations.
Love the purple and pops of orange. And all the angular constructions. These buildings look like something straight out of a fairy tale.
Just mind blowing parts usage. Who would have ever thought to use a blue wizard hat to illustrate water being poured from a bucket?
If Derfel is not the king of medieval fantasy LEGO creations, who is? Leave their names in the comments!
